- Edition: SQL Server 2019 Standard is one of the editions available in the SQL Server 2019 family. It offers core database management capabilities suitable for small to medium-sized businesses and departments within larger organizations.
- Features: SQL Server 2019 Standard includes essential database features such as data storage, query processing, security, backup and recovery, and business intelligence tools. It provides robust performance, scalability, and reliability for everyday database operations.
- Limitations: While SQL Server 2019 Standard offers comprehensive database functionality, it may have some limitations compared to higher editions such as SQL Server 2019 Enterprise. These limitations can include restrictions on the maximum size of databases, the number of supported CPU cores, and certain advanced features like advanced data compression and online indexing operations.
- Licensing: SQL Server 2019 Standard can be licensed using various models, including core-based licensing and Server + CAL (Client Access License) licensing. The appropriate licensing model depends on factors such as the number of CPU cores in the server, the number of users accessing the server, and the specific requirements of the organization.
- Compatibility: SQL Server 2019 Standard is compatible with various operating systems, including Windows and Linux. It supports integration with other Microsoft products and services, such as Azure cloud services, Visual Studio development tools, and Power BI for data analysis and reporting.
- Deployment Options: SQL Server 2019 Standard can be deployed on-premises, in the cloud, or in hybrid environments, providing flexibility in how organizations manage their databases and infrastructure.
What is SQL Server Core?
Under the Core Based License, a single server can support an unlimited number of users and devices. Be sure to follow the guidelines when installing SQL servers.
- Each instance of SQL server software running on a physical operating system environment requires a core license for each core in the CPU.
- For every actual processor on the server, you require at least four core licenses (core licenses are sold in packs of two).
- In order to use the SQL Server or any of its components, a license is required. It’s important to note that the SQL server products cannot be divided between multiple machines. If you have the SQL Server Agent running on one server and the SQL Server Reporting Services running exclusively on a different server, you would need to obtain two separate licenses. To ensure compliance, it’s recommended that all SQL Server products be licensed under a single license.
Benefits of Core-Based Licensing
- When you purchase Server + CAL licenses, you need to buy a license for every external person/device. This can be quite expensive and difficult to keep track of. In such cases, Core-based licensing is usually the only option when the SQL server is being accessed by devices and users who are not part of your company’s network.
- Ideal for larger enterprises due to its simplified management. Imagine managing a global corporation with thousands of workers; it would be tedious to keep track of who requires what CAL.
- Additionally, it may work out to be less expensive for larger enterprises, particularly if your users outweigh your cores.
System Requirements
- Windows Server: SQL Server 2019 Standard Edition is supported on Windows Server 2016 and Windows Server 2019 editions.
- Linux: SQL Server 2019 Standard Edition is supported on various Linux distributions, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, and Ubuntu.
- Minimum: 1.4 GHz 64-bit processor
- Recommended: 2.0 GHz or faster multi-core processor
- Minimum: At least 2 GB of RAM
- Recommended: At least 4 GB of RAM or more, depending on workload and database size
- Minimum: At least 6 GB of available hard disk space for SQL Server installation
- Recommended: Additional disk space required for databases, log files, and other data files
- Full Text Search: An additional 50 MB of disk space is required for each full-text index.
- Analysis Services, Reporting Services, Integration Services: Additional disk space may be required depending on the specific features and components you choose to install.
